Water courses

The intricate network of rivers called “Litoranea Veneta” connects the mouth of Po River with Trieste’s gulf and it extends on the Eastern Venetian area to include the rivers Tagliamento, Lemene, Livenza, Piave and Sile. Thanks to these water routes, it is possible to reach by boat in the hinterland numerous places of cultural and environmental interest, unique for their particularities. River Lemene flows through cities like Portogruaro and Concordia Sagittaria; River Livenza touches Santo Stino, Torre di Mosto, and ends in Caorle; Piave River flows through Noventa, Fossalta, Musile, San Donà, and Eraclea; Tagliamento River marks the border with Friuli and touches San Giorgio, San Michele and Cesarolo and flows in the Adriatic Sea near Bibione; and finally Sile River that runs along the Venice lagoon, in Caposile and Jesolo.

On the west, the territory of San Donà di Piave may be all explored by boat thanks to the Sile and Piave rivers, which are connected with numerous canals, such as “il taglio sul Sile”, the “Canale Cavetta” and the old “corso del Piave”. Their waters flow calmly and their banks are rich with vegetation, willow trees, poplar trees and reed-thicket, ideal habitat for water birds.

The eastern part of the territory, in the district of Portogruaro, has in its lagoon the most interesting aspect. Between Livenza and Tagliamento, along the Lemene River, one may encounter several banked water areas: ponds, lakes, lagoons, brackish basins, all connected to the rivers with a thick net of navigable canals. By navigating along the river one can find a variety of landscapes, marked at different levels by human intervention: one can see, hanging on the rivers, the trawl-net for fishing, an activity typical of the area; one can find untouched/ nature in the lagoons and dry bed, or see the water-scooping machines, built in the first half of the 20th century, the navigation locks, and the many bridges, connecting cultures and traditions, and sometimes also different languages.

The majority of the viaducts are still practicable, though sometimes only on foot or by bike; others, for instance in Brian, prevents the navigation on the Livenza Morta, a canal specifically created for irrigation purposes. Many nautical maps and informative brochures about the water routes in the territory are obtainable, and organized trips by boat are also available. Visitors interested in exploring the water courses in the territory are highly encouraged to acquire before hand all the information about the rivers and the canals, so to have a safe tour, in full respect of the delicate natural environment of the area. All water rescue and first aid equipment must be ready for use, the boat must be efficient and with sufficient fuel for the selected itinerary, travellers must carry on the boat first aid kit, water and some food, especially in the summer months, when temperature and level of humidity can be particularly high.
